The Smart Closet Trick: 3 Boxes for Decluttering

Why I Decided to Tackle My Closet

Every now and then, you look at your closet and think, ‘What on earth have I done?’ It’s like a black hole for clothes, shoes, and, let’s be honest, things you haven’t worn since the last Olympics. I was having one of those moments when I stumbled upon a simple yet brilliant solution: three boxes. Sounds a bit basic, doesn’t it? But stick with me on this.

The Box System: How It Works

The beauty of this method lies in its simplicity. You need three boxes, and each box has a purpose. Here’s how I set mine up:

  • Box 1: Keep – This is for items you absolutely love and wear frequently. If it sparks joy (thanks, Marie Kondo), it goes in here.
  • Box 2: Donate – Clothes that don’t fit, you haven’t worn in the past year, or are just not your style anymore? Toss them in this box. Someone else will appreciate them.
  • Box 3: Repair – We all have that top with a button missing or those shoes we can’t bear to part with. Put them here for mending later.

Getting Started

First things first, tackle one section of your closet at a time. Trying to do it all at once is a recipe for disaster—you’ll just end up faffing around and feeling overwhelmed. Start with the clothes you wear the least or that dreaded “special occasion” section.

When you find an item, ask yourself some questions:

  • Have I worn this in the last year?
  • Does it fit me now?
  • Do I actually like it?

Be ruthless—if the answer is no, it goes into the appropriate box. Remember, it’s not the end of the world if you part with something. Besides, the more you clear out, the more room you’ll have for new treasures!

Seeing Results

Once I had sorted everything into my three boxes, I was struck by a wave of relief. I could actually see the back of my closet! It felt like I was breathing again. The boxes provided a structure that made the whole process less daunting than just diving in blindly.

Maintaining The Order

This isn’t a one-time gig, though. To keep things tidy, I’ve made a commitment to re-evaluate my closet every season. The boxes are now my trusty allies—if something new comes in, something old must go out. It’s a simple mantra that keeps my wardrobe in check.

Join the Declutter Revolution

So, if you find yourself staring into a packed closet, give the three-box method a try. It’s sorted my chaos, and I suspect it might do the same for you. What’s your closet situation like? What’s stopping you from getting started?
